# 100 Series Switch/Dimmer Installation

Installation and wiring help for the WS100 and WD100.

## WARNING

**RISK OF FIRE \| RISK OF ELECTRICAL SHOCK \| RISK OF BURNS**

DO NOT USE THIS SWITCH TO CONTROL ANYTHING THAT MAY PRESENT A HAZARD WHEN CONTROLLED REMOTELY OR USED IN AN UNATTENDED FASHION. DO NOT USE WITH MEDICAL AND LIFE SUPPORT INSTRUMENTS.

**CAUTION:** TO REDUCE THE RISK OF OVERHEATING AND POSSIBLE DAMAGE TO OTHER EQUIPMENT, DO NOT INSTALL TO CONTROL A RECEPTACLE, A MOTOR-OPERATED APPLIANCE, A FLUORESCENT LIGHTING FIXTURE, OR A TRANSFORMER-SUPPLIED APPLIANCE.

**INSTALLATION**

**Tools required:** medium standard and Phillips head screwdrivers, wire strippers/cutters

1. Shut off power to the circuit at the circuit breaker or fuse box. **VERIFY power is OFF before continuing!**

2. Remove existing switch's wall plate and mounting screws. Carefully remove the existing switch from the electrical box but leave the wires connected.

3. There may be up to five wires connected to the existing switch. Make note of these wires and label, if necessary, to ensure correct installation of the HS-WD100+. You will need to match these wires with the corresponding screw terminals on the HS-WD100+. **Note: LINE, NEUTRAL and LOAD wires are required for every installation**

LINE (Hot) - Black (connected to power)

NEUTRAL - White (this wire is often tied to other neutral wires and may require a jumper to connect with the HS-WD100+)

LOAD - Black (connected to load)

   GROUND --- Green or Bare

TRAVELER --- Red/Other (only used in 3-way circuits)

4. Disconnect the wires from the existing switch and attach those wires to the HS-WD100+ using the screw terminal connectors on the back with the following procedure

   1. Strip 16 mm (5/8") insulation from each wire\*.

   2. With a screw driver, loosen each screw terminal by rotating the screw counter-clockwise a few turns until resistance is felt.

   3. There are two holes on the back of the switch near each screw terminal. Insert the stripped wire into one of these holes and tighten the screw terminal to secure the connection. Connections should be snug.

*\*all wires should be 14 AWG or larger rated at 80°C or higher. Tightening torque should be 12 lbf-in (14kgf-cm).*

5. Carefully install the wired switch back into the electrical box and reattach the trim plate.

# 800 Series Controller Migration Guide (SmartStick or Z-NET)

Use this guide for migrating from a 500 or 700 series Z-Wave interface to an 800 series interface (SmartStick G8, Z-NET G8 or Z-NET PRO)
![image-20260226-211240.png](https://docs.homeseer.com/__attachments/a_b844594ee0e52f2225ef990352f151161f2c5b506a4526bbbe08888e5da002d3/image-20260226-211240.png?cb=e1a3756352627005e0288a673c26ab23)

## Overview

Users who wish to migrate or upgrade from their existing interface to an 800 series interface can easily accomplish this, but care must be exercised to avoid damaging ("bricking") the interface. Follow the steps below to ensure the best outcome. **Note**: The terms "interface" and "controller" refer to the same thing and are used interchangeably.
![:warning:](https://docs.homeseer.com/__attachments/a_77c5e0fd0f725f55f1394201400a5d7bdb53bed36184cec25ae670057a5640da/atlassian-warning?cb=14432459925d605e05cae2605cdfe666)
++**DO NOT use the Z-Wave PC Controller app OR ANY OTHER METHOD**++ to perform a migration. ++**That may render the 800 series controller unusable and void its warranty**++ **.**

## On a HomeSeer system

The following assumes you're running **HS4 4.2.22.4** or later with the **Z-Wave Plus plugin v1.1.9.0** or later. If not, update your system and migrate to Z-Wave Plus first: [Migrating from Z-Wave to Z-Wave Plus](https://docs.homeseer.com/products/migrating-from-z-wave-to-z-wave-plus.md)

1. **Back up your existing Z-Wave controller**

   1. Navigate to **Plugins \> Z-Wave Plus \> Advanced Functions** and select **Backup Interface**. Complete the steps and make a note of the backup file name.

2. **Enable Z-Wave Plus to display the Z-Wave JS Front-End**

   1. If you don't have access to the Z-Wave JS Front-End, navigate to **Plugins \> Z-Wave Plus \> Manage Networks** , scroll to the **Z-Wave JS Network** section and tick the box next to **Show ZWave JS Front-End** and click **SAVE**.

3. **Determine the Z-Wave SDK of your existing Z-Wave controller**

   1. Navigate to **Plugins \> Z-Wave Plus \> Z-Wave JS Front-End** . The first device on the Control Panel page is your Z-Wave controller. This will be device **ID 001** and the Z-Wave SDK will appear in the **FW** column. 👉 If the SDK version is lower than v6.61, follow the procedure in [Converting Older Z-Wave Backups for Z-Wave Plus or Z-Wave JS Restore](https://docs.homeseer.com/products/converting-older-z-wave-backups-for-z-wave-plus-or-z-wave-js-restore.md) before advancing to the next step.

4. **Install your new 800 series Z-Wave controller**

   1. Disconnect your existing Z-Wave controller and connect your new 800 series Z-Wave controller.

   2. Navigate to **Plugins \> Z-Wave Plus \> Manage Networks** . If you only have one Z-Wave network (typical), you'll be adjusting the settings on this page. If you have multiple networks, select the network you wish to migrate by clicking its name under the navbar. In this example, the network is named "SmartStick":

      ![image-20260506-203548.png](/__attachments/a_a523d38229bb7eeef8a951ee0fcc6916d1318b05dec97c211cbfd93c51fe3fa2/image-20260506-203548.png?cb=dab4843a203f70890562f98319caba5d)
   3. Click the **DISABLE NETWORK** button, then reconfigure the Z-Wave Interface settings to connect to the new 800 series interface. **Do not click ADD NEW NETWORK**.

   4. Update the **Friendly Name** (if desired) under **Z-Wave JS Network**.

   5. Click **SAVE** to save your changes.

5. **Restore your Z-Wave network to the new 800 series Z-Wave controller**

   1. Navigate to **Plugins \> Z-Wave Plus \> Advanced Functions** and select **Restore Interface** . Select the backup created in **step 1**above and complete the steps.

## On a Home Assistant system

Home Assistant has two Z-Wave add-ons, the (official) Z-Wave JS addon, and the community add-on for Z-Wave JS UI. Only the latter supports NVM backup and restore. Users can also run Z-Wave JS UI standalone (e.g. in Docker) as an alternative to using the community add-on, or entirely separate from Home Assistant.
The following assumes you're running one of these **Z-Wave JS UI** versions: Standalone Z-Wave JS UI **v9.9.0** (or later) or HA Community Add-on **v3.4.0** (or later)

1. **Back up your existing Z-Wave controller**

   1. Open the Z-Wave JS UI **Control Panel** , click the round blue hamburger menu button and select **Advanced actions**.

   2. Find the **NVM Management** action, click the **BACKUP** button and click **OK** to begin the backup. This may take a few minutes to complete. When finished, an **NVM_\<date\>.bin** backup file will be generated and saved in your **store** directory or downloads folder.

2. **Determine the Z-Wave SDK of your existing Z-Wave controller**

   1. Access the Z-Wave JS UI Control Panel again and check the SDK version of your Z-Wave controller.

3. **Install your new 800 series Z-Wave controller**

   1. Disconnect your existing Z-Wave controller and connect your new 800 series Z-Wave controller.

   2. Configure its path in the Z-Wave JS UI settings.

4. **Restore your Z-Wave network to the new 800 series Z-Wave controller**

   1. Open the **NVM Management** action again, click the **RESTORE** button, select the **NVM_\<date\>.bin** backup file you created in Step 3 and click **OK**. This will initiate the restore process. A notification will appear when the process is complete. If the migration was successful, you should now be able to monitor and control your Z-Wave devices.

These instructions may change over time. Be sure to check the official Home Assistant documentation for the most up to date information.

## Troubleshooting

Removing a device and re-adding it is a common troubleshooting step. The removal process resets the device and can be done even if the device was never added to a network.

**The device fails the inclusion process**

Occasionally, Z-Wave devices may fail to add correctly, resulting in an error.

* Perform a Z-Wave device removal and then attempt the inclusion again.

* Restart the Network

**The device is not being seen after starting the inclusion process**

If the device was part of another network, it will contain addressing data related to that network and will need to be cleared.

* Perform a Z-Wave device removal and then attempt the inclusion again.

Z-Wave Inclusion distances can fluctuate greatly depending on the environment and the structure of the Z-Wave network.

* Perform a Z-Wave device removal and then attempt the inclusion again.

* Bring the Z-Wave device and the interface as close as possible and attempt the inclusion again. If successful, the devices can be moved farther apart. Note that more Z-Wave devices on the network will help with communication over greater distances.

**The device was added, but is not showing up correctly in the device list**

* Refresh the device list

* Rescan the device

* Perform a Z-Wave device removal and then attempt the inclusion again.

If you continue to experience issues, contact HomeSeer support.

## Notes

**Z-Wave Encryption**

* **S2 encryption** is supported by Z-Wave Plus devices. When adding a device using this method, you will be asked to enter the device's DSK code. This code will always be printed on the device next to a small QR code. If this code is not present, then the device does not support S2. If you skip the DSK prompt, the plugin will add the device using S0 automatically.

* **S0 encryption** is an older but still secure encryption method that all but the oldest Z-Wave devices support.

* **No Encryption** adds the device without any security. Very old devices do not support encryption and need to be added using this method. Some newer devices may time out before they can be securely added if the secure pairing process takes too long. In such cases, unencrypted inclusion can be used to complete the pairing. However, this should only be done if the device fails to include with encryption.

# Add Interface (Legacy)

Information on adding Z-Wave interfaces to your HomeSeer platform.

## Overview

Whether you are setting up your HomeSeer system for the first time or have a new Z-Wave interface to expand your existing system, your interface will need to be added and initialized in HS4 before Z-Wave devices can be added to it. The steps below are appropriate for both new and existing systems.

## Procedure

1. Navigate to **Plugins \> Z-Wave \> Add Interface**

   ![Add Interface.JPG](https://docs.homeseer.com/__attachments/a_2763a8dd3527402dc60b4ba703b61d3b4c90ac074e567533609c1cb484018caa/Add%20Interface.JPG?cb=bc64096821b8b50e74156b9fd30a0119)

2. Click the "New Interface" field, then enter a name for your interface. It is a good idea to enter a name which tells you what interface you are working with at a glance. Some examples are "HomeTroller SmartStick" or "Living Room Z-Net". Click **Continue**.

3. You will be prompted to select the Interface Model out of a drop-down menu. Select the appropriate interface model for the hardware you are using. Click **Continue**.

4. Select a port out of the options given in the Serial Port drop-down menu. If you are unsure of the port, trial and error will not break your hardware and is recommended. Click **Add**.

5. The interface will be added, then started. You are now ready to [add device](https://docs.homeseer.com/products/add-device-legacy.md)[s](https://docs.homeseer.com/products/add-device-legacy.md)!

If the process fails, you will be prompted to check the Manage Interfaces page at **Plugins \> Z-Wave \> Manage Interfaces**.

## Notes

If you are adding an additional Z-Wave interface to an existing setup, HomeSeer recommends letting each interface manage its own network. By default, adding an interface creates a new network for it so there is no extra setup required. You will want to add Z-Wave Devices that will be installed nearest a given interface to that interface's network.

If you are adding an interface which already has a network to a new system and do not have a Z-Wave backup, you can use the [Import Node Info from Controller and Scan Devices](https://docs.homeseer.com/products/importing-z-wave-devices.md) action.

# Adding Firmware files

Manufacturers are welcome to include their own firmware files with the Z-Flash application. Firmware files may be included as Intel HEX files or may be encrypted using the HECEncrypt tool. This doc will show you how.

## Adding Firmware Files

Manufacturers are welcome to include their own firmware files with the Z-Flash application. Firmware files may be included as Intel HEX files or may be encrypted using the HECEncrypt tool.

**To add your own firmware files:**

1. Install the Z-Flash application from the downloads page at [homeseer.com](http://homeseer.com/)

2. Find the install folder for the application, normally in c:\\program files (x86)\\HomeSeer\\HomeSeer Z-Flash

3. In that folder you will find a folder named "updates". That folder will contain sub folders, one folder for each firmware update file.

4. The individual firmware update files need to be named properly. To name the folder you will need 3 pieces of information:

   | 1 | Device manufacturer ID in decimal, for example, HomeSeer would be "12" |
   | 2 | Device product ID in decimal, for example the HomeSeer HSM200 product ID would be "1" |
   | 3 | Device product TYPE in decimal, for example, the HomeSeer HSM200 product TYPE would be "4" |
   |---|--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------|

So the folder for the HomeSeer HSM200 would be "12_1_4". This tells Z-Flash that this folder holds the update for this device.
5. Create the folder or folders as required.

6. In each folder, copy in the .HEX or .HEC file for the device. Name the actual firmware file as follows:

7. PRODUCTNAME_v_VER.VER.hex (or .hec if encrypted)

8. For example, if the product was "acme_motion_sensor" and the version was "3.5" and the file was encrypted, the file name would be:

9. "acme_motion_sensor_v_3.5.hec"

10. The version information is important as it lets the user know in Z-Flash if they need to update or not. The product name should also be obvious to the user so they can verify they are applying the correct update.

11. Run Z-Flash, add your device, then ensure the update is available from the "File" drop list under step 3. Apply the update and ensure it updates properly.

### Encrypting Files

If you would like your HEX files encrypted, contact HomeSeer and request a copy of the HECEncrypt.exe encryption tool. This tool will take an intel HEX file and encrypt it to a "HEC" file which Z-Flash can read.

![image2022-10-12_12-44-37.png](https://docs.homeseer.com/__attachments/a_4f033705efd5170f42fd348abe1ba245a9e8eb19e4c3dbaf35ba77795eb7f655/image2022-10-12_12-44-37.png?cb=a986324bdb31c46ff595a4c10145d44d)

**To use this tool:**

Make sure your system has .NET 4.6 or later installed, then run the EXE.

1. In the Input section, select the .HEX file or .OTA file you want to encrypt.

2. In the Output section fill out the manufacturer ID, Device Product ID, Device Product Type, and the firmware version number.

3. Select an output folder, maybe on your desktop. This output folder will hold all the sub folders, one for each update.

4. Click on the "Convert" button to encrypt the file, create the named sub folder, and write the file.

The tool will automatically format the output folder for you as well as the proper format of the new .HEC file.

5. Now simply copy the subfolder to your Z-Flash updates folder. You may zip up your folders and email them to [support@homeseer.com](mailto:support@homeseer.com) and we will include them with the application.

  * When to use: Use this to check device communications if your Z-Wave network seems slow or cannot be reliably monitored and controlled.

* **Rebuild All Routes** - A command is sent to all normally awake devices to force them to rediscover their neighboring devices.

  * When to use: Use this to strengthen the wireless mesh and improve performance for all devices and for their neighbors.

* **Restart interface** - A command is issued to the controller to restart.

  * When to use: Use this command if your controller appears to be in a bad state and restarting the Z-Wave Plus plugin has not helped.

* **Backup Interface** - This command creates a backup file of all Z-Wave node information that's stored on the interface.

  * When to use: Use this command to create a backup after devices have been added or removed from the controller.

* **Restore Interface** - This command erases the controller and restores a Z-Wave node backup to your controller.

  * When to use: Use this command when transferring your Z-Wave network from one controller to another.

* **Reset and Erase Interface** - This command erases all Z-Wave node information from the controller and resets it to factory defaults.

## Smart Home Skill Setup

1. Open the Alexa app on your mobile device sign in to your Amazon account.

2. Click on the menu icon upper left corner of the screen to open more options. You may need to close the devices view in order to see this menu.

3. On this screen, click Settings to display the list of available settings.

4. Scroll down and select **Manage Alexa+ Services**. A list of available services appears.

5. Scroll down to the bottom of the screen and select **Skills \& Games**.

6. To see any skills already enabled, scroll down to the bottom of the screen and click on the **Your Skills** button.

7. If you do not have the HomeSeer skill enabled, enter **HomeSeer** in the search box at the top of the screen and search,

8. Select **HomeSeer** **SmartHome** and click **Enable**.

9. Our MyHS login page will appear. Enter your credentials and click **Log In**.

10. After you log in, Alexa will search your devices and add the devices that are marked for Alexa. Make sure you edit the devices in HomeSeer and check the box "Amazon Alexa Discovery". This tells Amazon to add this device to the Alexa App.

11. The App may then list your devices and ask you to assign them to rooms. You can skip this and add them to rooms later if you wish.

## Testing

After device discovery is complete, you should be able to control any discovered device by using any combination of its name and location. For example, if the discovered device is First Floor Living Room Candle Lights, the following commands should work:

* "Alexa, turn on the **Candle Lights**"

* "Alexa, turn on the **Living Room Candle Lights**"

* "Alexa, turn on the **First Floor Living Room Candle Lights**"

## Troubleshooting

If for any reason, you can't control your devices after discovery, here are a few things to check:

* Verify that your MyHS account is setup correctly in the Users tab and that the correct devices or features have Alexa discovery enabled. [See here](https://docs.homeseer.com/products/alexa-google-integration/troubleshooting-google-home-amazon-alexa) for more details.

* Make sure a single user is assigned to each system. Create a new user and assign them to the system you want to use with Alexa, if needed.

* Make sure MyHS is connected to your system. Navigate to [myhs.homeseer.com](http://myhs.homeseer.com/) and access your system.

* If you are managing multiple systems in MyHS, make sure you have a unique username assigned to each system. If the same user is assigned to multiple systems, Alexa will not function properly since it does not have a way to allow you to select a system.

* Make sure your Amazon Alexa device is working.

* Check your Internet connection.

* If a device is not appearing in the Alexa App, go to the device properties in HomeSeer, select the Status/Graphics tab, and make sure the control points have a Control Use setting set. This tells Alexa how to control the device. This value should be set by whatever plugin created the device but its possible some plugins are not setting this.

# Backup Interface

Information on backing up a Z-Wave interface on the HomeSeer platform.

## Overview

Backups are essential for recovering your network if your interface hardware fails, and they also make it possible to migrate your network when upgrading to a new interface without having to recreate your Z-Wave network.

## Navigation

Access the Manage Interfaces page from **Plugins \> Z-Wave \> Advanced Functions**

![image2022-6-7_16-18-37.png](https://docs.homeseer.com/__attachments/a_d3ca68a371277a6eb16da00aeb29df4a16172a975343900435951848b0ed57d7/image2022-6-7_16-18-37.png?cb=d617ceac657110727e0de80f1955ea59)

## Procedure

1. From the Advanced Functions page, select **Backup Interface** in the drop-down menu, then click **Continue** .

   ![Z-Wave Advanced Select Backup.JPG](https://docs.homeseer.com/__attachments/a_4cd55c196f1298a93ed1187b79bd39bfc99f9b6f0728657b5b690a546f0bb2fb/Z-Wave%20Advanced%20Select%20Backup.JPG?cb=e94f863a90bbcbc452b91d8d90aa53b8)

2. You will be presented a default file name for your backup including the network ID and date. Leave this as-is or enter a name that will be help you recall exactly which backup you are looking at in the future. Click **Start**.

3. The system will log the process of creating your backup and move along to step 4 once it is complete. Press **Details** to review these logs if you like. Click **Finish** and you will be returned to the Devices page.

## Notes

* Whenever you add a Z-Wave device to your network, HS4 will automatically create a backup of your network at that time. If you do not recall manually creating a backup, check the [Restore Interface From Backup](https://docs.homeseer.com/products/restore-interface-from-backup.md) guide as your system should have at least one.

* The file extension used for your backup file depends on which series interface you have. Z-Wave interfaces using the 500 series chip will save as a .zwave file while 700 series interfaces will save as a .nodes file. This is handled automatically and should not be changed.

* If creating the backup does not complete successfully, please [contact support](https://docs.homeseer.com/display/DEVHS4/Set+Feature+Display+Type?focusedCommentId=28639490#comment-28639490) and provide the log entries seen after clicking **Details**. Please attach these log entries as a .txt attachment to your ticket.
